KNX sensors VS 240V sensors
Why Choose KNX Sensors Over 240V Sensors in Commercial Buildings?
Many electricians and installers can often default to 240V sensors for lighting control within commercial spaces because “they’re cheaper and can do the job”.
Whilst they can be good for basic on/off control and are generally less expensive upfront, they are quite limited in what they can do.
Once you look beyond basic 240V sensor control, KNX sensors offer much more capability when it comes to functionality, interoperability, energy efficiency and long-term cost savings. KNX sensors can support a finely tuned energy management system or they can easily be utilised and integrated into any multi-protocol building controls environment, say with DALI lighting and BACNet HVAC controls. This is where KNX sensors really shine as they can send data across the KNX bus network, which can also be translated onto the DALI network and/or the BACNet network. Why install three separate sensors and cables when one sensor can do the job and do it well?
The initial uninstalled cost may be higher for a KNX sensor, however, the benefits of utilising a KNX sensor within a well designed, multi-protocol building controls system can easily lead to installed cost savings and greater flexibility for the future.
Also, in large commercial spaces, like offices or hotels, using 240V sensors often means installing many units. For instance, in a hotel corridor, you might need one sensor every 4-5 meters, resulting in up to 15 sensors per floor. With KNX sensors, though, you can achieve the same level of control with just 5-6 strategically placed units. This reduces the number of sensors needed, cutting down on wiring and maintenance costs — which saves you time and money in installation and upkeep.
KNX sensors offer much more than motion or presence detection. Many models include temperature sensing, light harvesting, and occupancy detection.
